WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Lech Walesa is a big fan of social media ? and says if he had it back when he founded the Solidarity rights movement in 1980, he wouldn't have had to keep meeting opposition colleagues in stadiums.
Honored with a 1983 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in peacefully ending communism in Poland, Walesa said he often discussed strategy with other activists while playing soccer or watching other sports to thwart Communist security agents determined to stop such meetings.
"In those days, there were no possibilities of communicating on a larger scale, there were no mobile phones," Walesa told The Associated Press in an interview Friday. "It was inconvenient for them (agents) to make arrests in a pitch (or) disturb a sports event, so we used such opportunities to agree on things."
Walesa served as democratic Poland's first popularly elected president from 1990-95. Now he travels the globe lecturing on having led a peaceful transition from communism to democracy, which Poles voted for in 1989.
The 68-year-old said his Samsung tablet and other Internet communications today help him work "faster, better, wiser."
He said he uses a tablet because it is the "wisest thing ever invented."
"A small appliance that I can put in my pocket and use in my lectures. I have texts, old and new," Walesa said. "It helps me."
Walesa was in Warsaw for the European Championships match in which Italy beat Germany 2-1 and advanced to the final.

Perhaps predictably given Sidney Crosby?s concussion history, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review?s Josh Yohe reports that the Penguins were not able to find an underwriter willing to take on the massive gamble that is Sidney Crosby?s ?lifetime contract? with Pittsburgh:
The Penguins cannot insure themselves against a concussion-related early retirement by franchise center Sidney Crosby, NHL sources told the Tribune-Review on Friday.
Crosby, 24, has missed all but 63 games the past two seasons because of concussion symptoms. He and the Penguins agreed to a 12-year contract worth $104.4 million ? all of it guaranteed. The team will present the contract to the league Sunday for approval.
Insurance companies offer teams protection against career-ending injuries, but Crosby?s concussion history is considered a pre-existing condition. If Crosby cannot finish his contract because of a concussion-related injury, he will still be paid in full, but the Penguins would not receive assistance from an insurance policy on the deal, sources said.

DILLON, Mont. (AP) ? Montana Western men's basketball coach Steve Keller has announced the signing of 6-foot-5 post Tige Wingo of Twain Harte, Calif.
Wingo averaged 12.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a senior at Summerville Union High School and was third in the league with 3.5 assists per game.
Keller says Wingo is a strong, athletic post player who also has the ability to step outside and hit a 3-point shot.

Company and partners purchase approximately $900 million of assets in second quarter of 2012
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--()--International real estate investment and services firm Kennedy Wilson (NYSE: KW) today announced that the company and its partners acquired Via Verde, a 277-unit apartment complex in Huntington Beach, CA for $65.7 million. In line with the company?s strategy of securing long-term fixed rate financing, Kennedy Wilson placed a $47.8 million ten-year loan on the property from Freddie Mac at 3.59%. This deal brings Kennedy Wilson?s total acquisitions for the second quarter of 2012 to $889 million, including $788 million of real estate and $101 million of loans secured by real estate.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Top Federal Reserve officials differed on whether the U.S. central bank needs to be more aggressive in spurring economic growth, indicating another round of easing is far from certain.
Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Evans, one of the U.S. central bank's strongest advocates for further monetary policy easing, said Wednesday he is flummoxed by the Fed's timidity in the face of high unemployment and low inflation.
However, his colleague, Atlanta Fed leader Dennis Lockhart, said the Fed would only need to act further if the economy took a turn for the worse or if Europe's simmering debt crisis boils over.
"I don't think the conditions have developed that require us to bring out bigger guns quite yet," Lockhart said in an interview with Nightly Business Report.
Lockhart, who unlike Evans wields a vote this year on the Fed's policy-setting panel, said policymakers' most recent action, extending a program swapping shorter-term bonds it owns for longer-term ones to push down longer-term interest rates, serves to maintain the right level of help for the weak recovery.
An escalation of problems in Europe, a sudden slowing of U.S. economic growth, a spike in job layoffs, or the risk of a deflationary spiral might be triggers for more Fed action that could include another round of bond buying, Lockhart said.
"If the circumstances call for it, more stimulus could be provided," he said.
The Atlanta Fed president's stance is as at the mid-point of Fed views that range from reluctance to further expand the central bank's underpinning of the modest recovery to those such as Evans who think more aggressive steps are urgently needed.
The Fed cut rates to near zero in December 2008 and has bought $2.3 trillion in bonds to pull the economy out of recession and spur an acceleration in growth. At its policy-setting meeting last week, Fed officials sharply slashed their gross domestic product forecasts for 2012 and 2013 and marked down the outlook for inflation.
Those changes to the U.S. central bank's summary of economic projections, suggest progress on its twin goals of full employment and stable prices is slowing if not stalled.
Instead of reacting with a new round of bond buying to boost jobs, the Fed took the much more modest step of adding six months to an existing program, known as Operation Twist, that is aimed at lowering long-term interest rates.
"I think if you look at our projections ... it's hard to understand why we wouldn't be willing to do more because the inflation outlook is lower than our objective," Evans told a small group of reporters at the Chicago Fed headquarters.
With unemployment at the "completely unacceptable" level of 8.2 percent and inflation set to fall, the Fed should be ramping up even more its already significant level of accommodation, Evans said. Extending Operation Twist is better than nothing, he said, but is likely to reduce 10-year Treasury yields by only about a tenth of a percent.
Although the Fed said in January it will take a "balanced approach" to meeting its goals, Evans suggested Wednesday the central bank should allow a bit more inflation in the pursuit of higher employment.
"I don't think we've clarified what we mean by ?balanced approach' at all," said Evans, who grimaced at times as he described an economy close to stall speed and faced with risks from Europe's crisis and elsewhere.
"I think that a balanced approach means I'd be willing to undertake accommodative policies at some risk of increased inflation - it's below our target - at some risk of increasing it above that by some amount," he said. "How much? How much? That's a fair question. We are not offering very much in delineating that."
The Fed last week kept its guidance that rates will stay low until at least late 2014, tying policy to the calendar in a fashion that virtually no Fed policymaker appears to support wholeheartedly.
Evans, for his part, said the Fed needs to provide more clarity around that guidance, and reiterated his view the central bank should promise to keep rates low until unemployment falls to 7 percent, or inflation threatens to rise above 3 percent.
It should also be clearer about how far inflation would need to deviate from the Fed's 2 percent inflation target, either above or below, before setting off alarm bells, he said.
Yet Evans suggested the Fed's communications sub-committee, of which he is a member, is not close to providing additional refinements to its current guidance.
"We are trying to understand the implications of what we've put in place, and whether or not there are simple enhancements, or alternative enhancements, that could improve things," he said.
Before committing to further quantitative easing, the Fed last week appeared to want to give European policymakers a chance to stabilize the crisis-stricken euro zone, warning of "significant downside risks to the economic outlook," including Europe's sovereign debt crisis.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke also said he was watching to see if jobs data might improve before unleashing any new round of bond purchases.

On October 23 , 2008 in Congressional testimony Alan Greenspan, as reported by the New York Times "a humbled Mr. Greenspan admitted that he had put too much faith in the self correcting power of free markets." This coming from someone who near ten years before, as Federal Reserve Chairmanof long standing, was one of the most forceful voices in Washington clamoring for the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Bank Act, the law which had clearly prohibited banking firms from gambling with their depositors money held directly or held in affiliated commercial banks. Yet seemingly, when all is said and done it seems, in this case, it becomes impossible to teach old dogs new tricks.
This past week (06.21.12) talking with Tom Keene on Bloomberg TV, Greenspan sprung to the aid of the Wall Street Mafia militating to emasculate the Dodd- Frank legislation by proclaiming loud and clear there is no need to return to the Glass -Steagall Bank Act and all it would imply in restricting the proprietary trading of banks. "Glass-Steagall was never a useful vehicle" Mr. Greenspan's words. The issue of proprietary trading, that is the risk prone casino gambling in such non-banking related position taking be they commodities such as oil, oil products, grains, base metals, etc., or uncovered financial instruments such as CDS' were swept into a homogenous category by Greenspan, that banks are structured to take risks. This, as though making loans to businesses, industry, municipalities, home owners, financing trade through letters of credit, were of the same construct than the rote commodity and financial instrument gambles undertaken by the likes of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase et al.
Citigroup, for one, well understood this distinction and their responsibility to the banking community, their shareholders and the economy at large after the financial disaster of September 2008 and thereafter divested themselves of their commodity trading division, Philipp Brothers, which at the time was among the largest oil traders in the world. This in sharp contrast to JPMorgan Chase, the biggest bank proponent of prop trading and the biggest adversary of the Volker Rule core to the Dodd-Frank legislation. JP MorganChase just before and after September 2008 expended billions to acquire the trading divisions of Royal Bank of Scotland's Sempra Commodities, the trading division of Bear Stearns, and making extensive investments in the gaming tables themselves by becoming the largest shareholder of the London Metal's Exchange.
JPMorgan's ambitious venture into prop trading, as has been reported extensively, was to have their huge unhedged (gambling) position in financial instruments blow up to a trading loss initially reported as a $2 billion wipe out, but now understood to be nearing $6 billion. Perhaps manageable for JPMorgan Chase, but such an extraordinary digression from traditional banking methodology has become, by example, and with the support of the likes of an Alan Greenspan springing to the aid of the Wall Street Brigade proclaiming there is no need to return to the Glass-Steagall Bank Act and by extension its Volcker Rule, placing our entire financial system at risk.
As an aside, the recent Congressional Hearings on JPMorgan's recent trading losses, might well have been far more enlightening if questions were also posed to Dimon about JPMorgan's proprietary trading in commodities such as crude oil, copper, and the like, and exactly what does that have to do with banking?
Oh, by the way, it has just been reported that Jamie Dimon will be getting a double digit raise this year on top of his tens of millions in 2011.

JAHANABAD, Pakistan (AP) ? When the Taliban blew the face off a towering, 1,500-year-old rock carving of Buddha in northwest Pakistan almost five years ago, it fell to an intrepid Italian archaeologist to come to the rescue.
Thanks to the efforts of Luca Olivieri and his partners, the 6-meter (nearly 20-foot)-tall image near the town of Jahanabad is getting a facelift, and many other archaeological treasures in the scenic Swat Valley are being excavated and preserved.
Hard-line Muslims have a history of targeting Buddhist, Hindu and other religious sites they consider heretical to Islam. Six months before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the Taliban shocked the world by dynamiting a pair of 1,500-year-old Buddhist statues in central Afghanistan.
The Jahanabad Buddha, etched high on a huge rock face in the 6th or 7th century, is one of the largest such carvings in South Asia. It was attacked in the fall of 2007 when the Pakistani Taliban swarmed across the scenic Swat Valley. The army drove most of them out two years later, but foreign tourists who used to visit the region still tend to stay away.
Olivieri himself had to leave in 2008 after more than two decades of tending to the riches dating back to Alexander the Great and the Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim invaders who followed. The 49-year-old head of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan returned in 2010 and is back at work.
Taliban militants climbed ropes to insert explosives in holes drilled into the face and shoulders of the Jahanabad Buddha, said Olivieri. The explosives in the shoulders failed to detonate, but the others blew off most of the face above the lips and cracked other parts of the carving and surrounding rock.
Olivieri and his team began work this month on fixing the cracks and what's left of the face. A full reconstruction is impossible because detailed documentation and fragments of the face are lacking.
"Whatever you do in the absence of perfect data is a fake," said Olivieri, who says he has wanted to be an archaeologist since age 6 and still brings a youthful exuberance to his work even as his beard grows gray.
Arriving as a university student in 1987, he was fascinated by Swat, once an important center of Buddhist culture and trade. The monk credited with introducing Buddhism to Tibet, Padmasambhava, was born in Swat.
In more recent decades, the area was known as "the Switzerland of Pakistan," popular with religious tourists from China, Japan and South Korea, and the hope is that restoration of the Jahanabad Buddha will spark a revival of tourism here.
Olivieri's mission is funded by the Italian government, which works with local Pakistani antiquities authorities. It has uncovered over 120 Buddhist sites among Swat's soaring hills and rushing rivers. Of roughly 200 Buddhist rock carvings in Swat, the Jahanabad Buddha was among the few to survive with its face intact for so long, said Olivieri. Most were defaced centuries ago by Muslim invaders who, like the Taliban, consider Buddha a false idol.
Maulana Shamsur Rehman, a leading Islamist politician in Swat, says the attack on the Buddha should never have happened. Islam preaches freedom and protection for followers of all religions, he told The Associated Press, and "in line with Islamic rules, nobody should have an objection to the repair work on the Buddha statue."
In 2001, militants damaged the excavated ruins of a 7th century Hindu temple in Swat overlooking a stronghold conquered by Alexander in the 4th century B.C. Unable to protect the temple, the Italian mission had to rebury it.
Ironically, the site that Olivieri was most worried about during the Taliban's violent reign in Swat was an Islamic one ? the roughly 1,000-year-old Udegram Ghaznavid mosque, the third oldest in Pakistan. He feared the militants would occupy and damage it, but that never happened.
Pakistani security officials say the Taliban are again trying to infiltrate Swat, but militants are not the only threat to the archaeological sites. Looters are perhaps a bigger problem. Many relics looted from Swat are in private and public collections around the world.
In December police arrested several men in Swat and seized a roughly one-meter-(three-foot) tall, 1,800-year-old Buddhist statue that could have fetched tens of thousands of dollars on the international antiquities market.
The Italian mission has posted guards at the most important sites and is also training them to become guides by teaching them English, first aid and basic conservation techniques, said Olivieri.
The mission opened in 1955 in an office provided by the Wali of Swat, the one-time princely ruler of the territory. To furnish a taste of home, its first draftsman painted a mural of Rome's Spanish Steps in the dining room.
The feeling of glimpsing Italy in the wilds of Pakistan's northwest continues today. There's espresso in the morning and Italian olive oil on the dining room table. A Fiat Campagnola jeep shipped from Italy in 1955 is due to end up in a museum in Swat.

CAIRO - Egypt's anxious week of waiting for a president, a week marked by street protests and angry accusations between rivals of subverting the new democracy by force, is finally ending.
On Saturday, the electoral commission set 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Sunday as the moment it will announce either that yet another general will fill the post left vacant by last year's overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, or that the Muslim Brotherhood, for decades the army's bitter enemy, will finally hold the highest office.
For many, the latter is more likely. But nothing is certain.
The ruling military council, which pushed Mubarak aside to appease the Arab Spring protesters, has just stripped the post of many powers and dissolved the Brotherhood-led parliament elected in January. Yet the presidency is still a prize, even if the vote will not end the power struggles over Egypt's future.
An Islamist president of Egypt, the biggest Arab nation, would be a major milestone for the Middle East, near unthinkable 18 months ago. It is far from confirmed. But the military, Brotherhood and others gave signs of expecting it will happen.
Brotherhood supporters camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where the revolution was won, were generally in festive mood, though fear of disappointment still nagged, after decades of rigged elections. In counterpoint, a few thousand rallied in a middle-class Cairo suburb to declare their support for the army.
The Brotherhood's candidate Mohamed Morsy, the 60-year-old, US-educated engineer and political prisoner under Mubarak, had declared victory within hours of polls closing last Sunday - a move condemned by the generals. He has already met other groups and drafted an accord to form a national coalition government.
His party issued a statement on Saturday saying it had called on "all partners in the nation, from all movements, to take part in this national platform, to guarantee the success of what we have achieved and their active participation in rebuilding the country in the manner it deserves."
One of those involved in the talks, Abdel Gelil Mostafa of the reformist National Association for Change, told Reuters: "We agreed on a general program, especially for if Morsy won.
"That seems probable. But, we will know tomorrow."
Brotherhood, army talks
By contrast supporters of former air force commander Ahmed Shafik, 70, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, kept a low profile, although Shafik said on Thursday has confident.
A victory for Shafik, who won backing in the run-off from voters who decided they liked religious rule even less than a candidate who appeared drawn from the familiar military establishment, could spark protests from well-organized Islamist movements, which security forces might confront on the streets.
Reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei said he had been in contact with the army and Morsy's camp to avoid a showdown, but said he was worried that, if Shafik were declared winner, "we are in for a lot of instability and violence ... a major uprising." His comments were carried by the CNN website.
However, there have been indications from senior figures in the Brotherhood and military council that they have prepared for a Morsy presidency in meetings since the election.
While officials deny any negotiation over the long drawn out process of tallying the election results themselves, there would be greater scope for compromise to defuse tension over what many have called the army's "soft coup," against parliament and the powers of the president, if Morsy is made head of state.
The Brotherhood has said it will go on protesting until the military council cancels the dissolution and a decree which gave its legislative powers to itself, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). But were its candidate to be confirmed in office, then the wary symbiosis between the two old enemies, seen since Mubarak was ousted, may continue in a new form.
It is a collaboration that irks many of the secular liberals who led the first wave of the uprising against Mubarak but found themselves fragmented and eliminated in last month's first round of voting, left with a difficult choice between army and Islam.
The military's role
Impatient Brotherhood supporters have been out on Tahrir Square day and night since midweek. Thousands were there again on Saturday, chanting "Victory for Morsy!" and "Morsy, Morsy, Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), while waving national flags.
"We want the military council to announce the real results without forgery," said Hassan Eissa, 43, an accountant from north of Cairo who was demonstrating on the square.
"They have no right," Eissa said. "Egyptians shouldn't be under any kind of guardianship after the revolution."
A few thousand people also gathered with flags in the suburb of Nasr City to praise the army, the institution has run Egypt, amassing wealth and privilege along the way for its upper ranks, since the "Free Officers" toppled King Farouk in 1952.
"We came here to tell all the people that we are standing by our army," one demonstrator told state-owned television channel Nile News. "Our army is the line that cannot be crossed, the red line which we will let no one touch."
The generals, who pushed aside Mubarak when popular protests could not be staunched, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close US ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.
While they have said that inaugurating the new president by July 1 will meet the deadline they set themselves for civilian rule, their moves in the past 10 days to curb the presidency and hang on to a veto over legislation, as well as to claim a role in drafting a new constitution, mean that the process goes on.
Washington and the European Union, both major aid donors, have expressed concern that the military is backtracking. But both also share its anxiety over a sweeping Islamist takeover, worried about Egypt turning anti-Western and reneging on its peace with Israel, and also voicing concern for civil rights.
Violence by hardline Islamists in Tunisia, whose revolt inspired that in Egypt, has troubled many Egyptian liberals.
Key to the transition to democracy will be drafting a constitution. That work has been hostage to partisan wrangling in the now defunct parliament, where one assembly collapsed after complaints it was too Islamist and a second faces a challenge in court on Tuesday that many expect to trigger a clause in the SCAF decree letting it name a new drafting panel.
The assembly met on Saturday, apparently hoping to prove it can work. But it may soon be replaced.
The Brotherhood has portrayed itself as a modern movement, ready to work with others and willing to respect treaties. Some supporters cite the example of Turkey as a model - a Muslim democracy with a history of military interference in politics, where devout, elected politicians have slowly asserted control.
The bearded, bespectacled Morsy was not a familiar figure to Egyptians. Some ridicule him as the movement's "spare tire"; his campaign began after a more senior leader was barred from the race. Critics say he would be a mere front-man as president, for less visible pillars of the Brotherhood behind the scenes.

Samsung wants iPhone users to know that they don?t have to give up their data if they switch to a Samsung Galaxy device. The company on Friday said that it would offer Galaxy buyers a free copy of Easy Phone Sync, an Android app designed to port crucial data from an iPhone to an Android device. Among other things, Easy Phone Sync can transfer iTunes music, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts and text messages. So far Samsung has only formally extended the offer of complimentary Easy Phone Sync to users in the United Kingdom, although anyone with a Samsung Galaxy device can download the app for free from the Google Play store. Easy Phone Sync is a simple new way for people to transfer their iPhone and iTunes media ? including music, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts and text messages ? to a Samsung Galaxy device including the new Galaxy S III.
As part of an exclusive licensing agreement with Media Mushroom Applications, Samsung is making Easy Phone Sync available for free for UK customers to transfer content from their iOS device to their Samsung Galaxy device in a few simple clicks. As well as being able to access DRM free content they have purchased from iTunes music, customers can continue to use iTunes software on their PC to manage their music, videos and podcasts and keep their Android device in sync with it.
