Pollination: with small rewards come bad results

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? The hawkmoth, a natural petunia pollinator, spends less time on Petunia lines that offer less nectar as a reward. That is the main result of a study carried out by Anna Brandenburg, a biologist at the universities of Berne and Neuch?tel with the support of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Plant Survival.

Published in the journal Current Biology, this study will be mentioned during the SOL 2012 -- Solanaceae conference, taking place from August 26 to 30 at the University of Neuch?tel.

Nectar plays a central role in most plant-pollinator relationships. It serves as a reward for services rendered by visitors that transport the plant's pollen. In nature, certain orchid species do not honour this tacit agreement. Instead, the plant economises these energy resources which it might be able to relocate to other plant structures for its own advantage: vigorous growth, greater seed production or improve on its pest defence mechanisms.

However, can this pollination with a reduced reward work for cultivated plants in terms of increased yield? Anna Brandenburg decided to test this hypothesis on petunia, an ideal model plant for garden vegetables since it belongs to the same family as the potato or tomato, the Solanaceae family.

After performing multiple crosses for this research, the biologist was able to create petunia lines that produced a volume of nectar three times less than that of the standard Petunia axillaris. At first glance, it seems that the plant comes out ahead, since Anna Brandenburg observed that manual pollination resulted in an increased seed production (20% to 30% more) in the low nectar plants compared to P. axillaris.

However, everything changes once the natural pollinators come into play. The hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) clearly spends less time visiting flowers offering a smaller reward, which consequently results in a considerable reduction in seed production. Thus, a simple self-serving action of the hawkmoth, namely the reduction of drinking time per flower, is sufficient to prevent the spread of cheating Petunias.

This situation, however, is reversible. By adding nectar to the flower varieties that produce less nectar, Anna Brandenburg was able to attract the pollinators' attention. Hence, with the hawkmoth staying longer on the plant, the quantity of seeds produced corresponds to the one that the biologist obtained with manual pollination.

Twitter set to become the newest addition to the Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation's been racking up big-name brands since its early days, and one of the latest is mostly everyone's favorite rapid-blogging service, otherwise more commonly known as Twitter. Following in the steps of chip-maker NVIDIA and that Platinum-leveled Samsung, the Blue Bird recently announced it'll be joining the open-source association come next week, with the official revelation set to take place in a few days at the LinuxCon North American gathering in California. Twitter's Manager of Open Source, Chris Aniszczyk, says that by doing so "we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter." Needless to say, this is a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Zipcar partners with Houston to push EV, hybrid use

US car sharing network Zipcar has partnered with the city of Houston to launch a municipal electric vehicle (EV) share programme.

The Houston Fleet Share initiative will use Zipcar?s technology to make 25 Nissan Leaf vehicles available to city employees across all departments.

It is funded by the State Energy Conservation Office, as part of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

In addition to the EVs on offer, the city has the third-largest municipal hybrid fleet in the US, with around 50 per cent of light duty vehicles already replaced by hybrids.

The partnership with Zipcar is aimed at increasing the use of these vehicles, and the Nissan EVs, as well as helping to reduce costs and gain new efficiencies in the city fleet.

Annise Parker, Mayor of Houston, said, ?Houston is setting the pace for sustainability efforts and we are very proud to be working with Zipcar to launch the nation?s first-ever municipal EV green fleet sharing programme.

?Although we?ve always been known as the oil capital of the world, we?re gaining momentum on being the energy capital through programs like Houston Fleet Share and the Houston Drives Electric initiative.?

Scott Griffith, Zipcar chairman and CEO, added, ?I would like to applaud Mayor Parker and the city of Houston for all the work they have done to make the city?s municipal fleet one of the most sustainable in the country through their dedication to EVs and hybrid vehicles.

?We?re excited to help make this programme even more efficient with the addition of Zipcar technology into these vehicles. By utilising Zipcar?s FastFleet technology through the new Fleet Share programme, the city of Houston joins smart city governments focused on developing solutions to complex transportation challenges.?

Pot, Heroin, and Playing Hockey - Battle of California

Since apparently most of our readers are drug addicts, and a few of them probably play hockey as well, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new series of posts examining the effects of some of the common recreational drugs on the body and mind and how those drugs would affect one's ability to play hockey.

I'll rate each drug physically and mentally on a scale of -5 to +5, with 0 being neutral, -5 meaning it would be impossible to play hockey on the drug, and +5 meaning the drug could probably make you better than Gretzky.

All of my information was taken from Wikipedia, which is a really awesome website to read when you are high.

Marijuana

Effects on the body

increased heart rate, dry mouth, reddening of the eyes (congestion of the conjunctival blood vessels), a reduction in intra-ocular pressure, muscle relaxation and a sensation of cold or hot hands and feet.

Most of these things sound pretty bad for hockey, though I guess there is a chance that having literal hot hands might help you score goals.

Effects on the mind

Some effects may include a general alteration of conscious perception, euphoria, feelings of well-being, relaxation or stress reduction, increased appreciation of humor, music or the arts, joviality, metacognition and introspection, enhanced recollection (episodic memory), increased sensuality, increased awareness of sensation, increased libido,^[30] and creativity. Abstract or philosophical thinking, disruption of linear memory and paranoia or anxiety are also typical.

Relaxation and stress reduction could be good or bad for playing hockey, I guess, though probably slightly more good than bad. Increased sensuality and libido are probably negatives, since they might make it difficult to skate properly (what with the inevitable boner and all). Increased awareness of sensation is a good thing. Paranoia and anxiety are bad.

Effects on hockey

Since so much of the experience of being high on pot is subjective, I thought it best to seek out some expert opinions on this subject:

Darthpot says: "when I got blazed playing hockey, I made tons of great passes."

Stickybudz says: "I go to water polo practice everyday stoned as fuck, the first time you jump in the pool it's crazy. Also some table tennis get's pretty intense too. Bong Pong, you play games to 3 and who ever loses packs the other a snap"

Ganja.Godfather says: "i play hockey high all the time.. i get mixed reactions, sometimes i feel better and sometimes i feel lazier."

resistance says: "the only sport im interested in playing, high or not, is poker"

Wow - I didn't realize that one of the horrible effects of smoking marijuana was that it made you an idiot who thinks poker is a sport. That's tragic.

Final Score

Physical: -1

Mental: 0

Overall: -1

In all likelihood marijuana won't have a serious negative effect on your ability to play hockey, but it's probably not going to help much. If you're lucky it might improve your mental game a little, but that's likely to be counteracted by the distraction of intense dry mouth and an unhealthy love of the band Phish.

Heroin

Effects on the body

Dry mouth, warm skin, slowed breathing, cough suppression, pain suppression, muscle weakness

Well that all sounds wonderful - but overall pretty awful for playing hockey.

Effects on the mind

"transcendent relaxation and intense euphoria"

"alternately alert and drowsy"

"Transcendent" is probably TOO relaxed for playing hockey, though if you could somehow time your "alert" states for when you were on the ice and just feel the drowsiness on the bench then that might be pretty good.

Effects on hockey

Shockingly, there aren't a lot of stories you can find online of people mixing heroin and sports, but I did find one:

My experiences with mixing dope and sports concentrated on martial arts. Doing both heroin and tae kwon do in a committed way wasn't as difficult as the nonuser may believe, but it required planning. I found that going to martial arts class the day after a night spent getting high worked well: since some heroin was still in my bloodstream, I felt less pain during the warm-up exercises. (My lifetime pull-up record?nine?was achieved one such day after.) But the day after the day after I was irritable, uncomfortable in my skin, and found martial arts purgatorial. Of course, if I got high that night, I ensured myself another good class the next night....

Okay so if you do heroin the night before playing hockey you might still have enough in your system for it to reduce physical pain...but it's a tricky timing issue. You probably need to have a really good calendar system going to make it work.

Oh and the very next paragraph talks about the author missing an incoming kick during a sparring session, crying like a bitch, and eventually having to stop most of his tae kwon do because he was becoming increasingly addicted to heroin. So there's that.

Final Score

Physical: -4

Mental: -3

Overall: -7

The pain-suppressing aspects of heroin don't come close to making up for the muscle weakness it causes, and you're also probably going to be way too relaxed to give a shit about not icing the puck if you try to play high.

In addition, you're probably going to become a junkie and ruin your god damn life if you do heroin, the most addictive and dangerous of the popular recreational drugs.

So, you know, in conclusion or whatever, you probably shouldn't do heroin.

Japan's PM meets protesters, won't stop reactors

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's prime minister met for the first time with leaders of weekly anti-nuclear protests Wednesday but rejected their demand that two recently restarted nuclear plants should be shut again.

Tens of thousands of people have been gathering every Friday night outside Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's office compound to protest against nuclear power because of safety concerns set off by last year's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear crisis.

The 11 protest leaders were allowed into the complex for the first time since they started chanting anti-nuclear slogans outside the tightly guarded building in April.

"When the majority of the general public opposed the restart, you forced it by trampling down on us. It was ridiculous and outrageous," protester Misao Redwolf told Noda as she sat across from him during the 30-minute meeting. "We will continue our protests as long as you keep ignoring our voices."

The protesters said meeting the prime minister was not their goal and they would continue to gather until their demands are met.

Noda initially called the demonstrations outside his office complex "big noise," triggering criticism. He promised the protesters on Wednesday that he would listen to people's views and reflect them in policy decisions.

But Noda did not accept their demands that his government shut down two reactors that were restarted in July and keep the rest of the country's 48 reactors shuttered.

He has repeatedly insisted that nuclear plants need to be restarted to avoid power shortages that would impact Japan's economy.

"I will carefully listen to your voices and in the end we will make a responsible decision as the government and choose an energy mix that is safe and reliable for the people," Noda said, wrapping up the talks.

Wednesday's meeting came four months after the anti-nuclear coalition requested one with Noda.

The protests started with dozens of people in April and have become mass demonstrations. The protesters say their peak turnout was as many as 200,000 people from around the country, while unofficial police estimates cited by media say 10,000 to 20,000 gather weekly.

Police provide extremely tight security. They fence off the crowd, effectively confining protesters to sidewalks and preventing them from forcing their way into Noda's official residence.

Japan required new safety checks on nuclear plants after the March 11, 2011, tsunami caused meltdowns at three reactors in Fukushima. All of Japan's 50 reactors went off line in May for maintenance and inspections, and only the two Ohi reactors in western Japan have resumed generating power.

The government is currently finalizing a mid- to long-term energy policy, deciding one out of three options of nuclear energy dependency by 2030 ? none, 15 percent or 20-25 percent. Officials initially had planned to pick a 15 percent scenario, but after town meetings and analyzing initial responses of public comments, they are now considering a zero-percent option.

Ryan says no further plans to push Akin from race

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Republican vice presidential contender Paul Ryan acknowledges he urged Missouri Congressman Todd Akin to abandon his Senate bid but has no further plans to speak to him about it now that Akin is staying in the race.

Ryan told reporters aboard his campaign plane Wednesday that he's proud of his anti-abortion record in the House and has no regrets about sponsoring legislation, with Akin, to permanently prohibit taxpayer funding for abortion except in cases of incest or, quote, "forcible" rape.

Leading Republicans including presidential candidate Mitt Romney have distanced themselves from Akin after the Missouri congressman suggested that women who had been subjected to "legitimate rape" would be able to physically resist becoming pregnant. Ryan would not oppose abortion in cases where a mother's life is in danger.

Instantly, I thought of summer bbq?s on the cape and delicious potato salads. You know the ones I?m talking about ? from local hole-in-the-wall summer shacks filled with sour cream, small pieces of celery and TONS of mayo!!!

Memories of pasta summer vacations filled my mind?

This new take on potato salad is not only healthier but is FILLED with color and will instantly become a favorite in your home!

Lemon Fennel Potato Salad

• 2 lbs. new potatoes
• 2 fennel bulbs, thinly chopped
• 4 cloves garlic, mined
• lemon olives(found at Whole Foods), sliced in half
• 1/2 jar capers, drained
• pint cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
• 4 tbsp. rice vinegar
• 1 tsp. lemon zest
• salt and pepper, to taste

Place a steamer basket in a large saucepan, add 1 inch of water and bring to a boil. Put potatoes in the basket and steam until barely tender when pierced, about 12-18 minutes, depending on size. When potatoes have cooled enough to touch, slice in half.

In a large bowl- add fennel, garlic, olives, capers, cherry tomatoes and potatoes. Mix. Add rice vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Japanese journalist killed covering Syria fighting

TOKYO (AP) ? A veteran Japanese war correspondent was shot and killed while covering Syria's civil war, her family and the government said Tuesday.

Mika Yamamoto worked for The Japan Press, an independent TV news provider that specializes in conflict zone coverage.

She was hit by gunfire Monday while she and a colleague were traveling with the Free Syrian Army in the northwestern city of Aleppo, said Masaru Sato, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo. The rebel army is trying to topple the regime of President Bashar Assad.

A YouTube video posted by an activist in Syria shows Yamamoto, 45, inside a van wrapped in blankets with only her face visible. An Associated Press reporter who had worked with Yamamoto and who viewed the video confirmed her identity.

In another video, apparently taken at a field hospital, her Japanese colleague Kazutaka Sato wept as he looked into her blood-smeared face, then gently pressed his cheek against hers.

"Why? You are wearing a flak jacket," he said, speaking to her lifeless body. "That must hurt. Did you suffer? Were you shot in the head?" he asked, sobbing. Then he saw her arm with gunshot wounds, apparently suffered as she covered her head. "Oh, that hurt, didn't it?"

Yamamoto was shot in the neck, her father Koji Yamamoto cited Japanese government officials as saying.

She had covered the war in Afghanistan after 2001 and the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq from Baghdad as a special correspondent for NTV, according to Japan Press' website.

She was the fifth foreign journalist to be killed in Syria since the start of the war, the media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders said. A sixth journalist died from a severe asthma attack during an undercover reporting trip.

The group said about 30 Syrian journalists and citizen-journalists have also been killed.

In the YouTube video, Capt. Ahmed Ghazali, a rebel fighter in the northern Syrian city of Azaz, says the Japanese journalist was killed by regime forces in Aleppo.

"We welcome any journalist who wants to enter Syria," Ghazali says. "We will secure their entry, but we are not responsible for the brutality of Assad's forces against the media."

Activists say Syria's conflict has killed more than 20,000 people since March 2011. Ghazali expressed frustration that the international community has not intervened in the war and said he hopes the journalist's death will encourage international action.

"I hope that these countries that have not been moved by Syrian blood will be moved by the blood of their people," he says.

Ghazali also said two other journalists were captured by Syrian government forces in Aleppo, including a reporter with Al-Hurra TV named Bashar.

A statement from Springfield, Virginia-based Al-Hurra said the video referred to correspondent Bashar Fahmi and his cameraman Cuneyt Unal. The company has not been able to reach either man since they entered Syria on Monday morning.

"We are currently working to gather more information about their status. The safety and wellbeing of our journalists is of utmost concern to us," it said.

Yamamoto's body has been transferred to Turkey, where Japanese consular officials were providing assistance, the Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

In an interview with a Japanese TV network from his home in Yamanashi, just north of Tokyo, Yamamoto's father said he respected her as a journalist who "always stood against those with power and thought of the weak."

He said he saw her as a journalist who cared about people, not as a war reporter.

"Whenever she was out on a reporting trip, I prayed for her safety. That's all I could do as a parent," he said. He recently sent her an email with the subject line "Praying for your safety," he said.

Just a few days earlier, Yamamoto said she was in Kilis, a Turkish village near the border.

"It's a very peaceful Turkish village," she wrote in her last message to her father.
