PFT: Rex says Jets didn't quit, they got tired

Redskins Saints FootballAP

When is a suspension not a suspension?? When the NFL says it isn?t.

A week after the NFL inexplicably unshunned Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, allowing him to attend the game between Seattle and St. Louis, the league has granted permission to suspended Saints coach Sean Payton, suspended Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis, and suspended Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt to attend Sunday night?s game between San Diego and New Orleans.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, quarterback Drew Brees sought and received permission for the three men to attend what should be a historic night.? With touchdown passes in 47 straight games, Brees can move to 48 and break his current tie with John Unitas.

?Drew Brees requested permission for Sean Payton, Mickey Loomis, and Joe Vitt to attend Sunday night?s game in which Drew will attempt to set the record of 48 straight games with a touchdown pass,? the league said in a statement.? ?Commissioner Goodell has granted that permission.? Coaches Payton and Vitt and Mickey Loomis will be permitted to watch the game in a private area of the stadium and will have no contact with the team.?

Payton previously said he didn?t want to attend the game.

The black light of justice likely would reveal extensive lawyer fingerprints on this decision.? It was horribly misguided to let Williams attend a game, especially after he gave a sworn statement implicating Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma as offering $10,000 to anyone who knocked former Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2009 NFC title game.? To erase the appearance of preferential treatment, the NFL had to extend a similar courtesy to the other folks who have been suspended.

It?s possible, if not probable, that Brees made the request not because he wants them there, but because he knows in his capacity as a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee that a rejection would have helped the cause of the players who face re-issued bounty suspensions, particularly Vilma.

Even with permission granted, the handling of Williams? situation justifies suspicion regarding some sort of a quid pro quo, and it means that if/when Williams testifies at an appeal hearing before Commissioner Roger Goodell, Williams will face a withering cross examination that will give new meaning to one of his favorite terms:? Kill the head.

Daily Kos: The universal laws of ladies in science

Inside Higher Ed has more on the Yale study:

Female scientists were as likely as male scientists to evaluate the students this way. For instance, the scientists were asked to rate the students' competence on a 5-point scale. Male faculty rated the male student 4.01 and the female student 3.33. Female scientists rated the male student 4.10 and the female student 3.32.
Even I still catch myself thinking of a stereotypical doctor as a guy with a stethoscope, despite the fact that I've had female doctors for my entire adult life. It's harder to get rid of these biases than we think.

The statistic about the decline of women studying computer science is taken from this NY Times op-ed by Stephanie Coontz.

America's best flea markets

10 hrs.

Shoppers from as far as Japan descend on Springfield, Ohio, for its twice-yearly market of 19th-century antiques. But the event isn?t stuck in the past. In 2012, it introduced live music, beer and wine stands, and trend-driven clothing and housewares.?

Slideshow: See America's best flea markets

The effort is paying off in Springfield, where the May 2012 market drew a record-breaking weekend crowd of 21,000 shoppers. Flea markets across America are seeing a similar surge of interest. Some credit goes to the popularity of reality TV series like "Oddities," "American Pickers"?and "Market Warriors,"?which have picked up the "Roadshow"?mantle and are mining the world of secondhand buying, selling, and collecting.?

As a result, a whole new group of travelers is discovering that braving the crowds at America?s liveliest flea markets delivers more than just deals; it?s a chance to get immersed in a local community, to be an archaeologist of the present. Who needs potsherds when you can pick up a piece of North Carolina Pisgah Forest Pottery circa 1940 just a few hours? drive from where it was made??

Meandering through a market also provides fantastic people-watching (and eavesdropping) opportunities. Want some reality of your own? You?re guaranteed to get a different take on a place?s traditions and culture from the dealer at the bluegrass record booth than you would from your hotel?s concierge.?

Fortunately, secondhand markets have never been more varied ? or more vibrant. A new wave of urban flea markets has taken off in Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn and beyond, bringing together old-fashioned junk-shoppers and a slew of budding entrepreneurs, artists and chefs, who benefit from the real-time, in-the-flesh market research (small-batch raspberry-and-green-peppercorn soda, anyone?).?

Whether they?re brand new or a century old, sprawling outdoor affairs or carefully edited exhibitions, the best flea and antique markets have a few key things in common: variety (in terms of both merchandise and price), accessibility (most are within an hour?s drive of a major city), and some hint of the area?s heritage (handmade quilts and furniture at the Amish-country flea market in Shipshewana, Ind.).?

And of course, that most important element: a little unvarnished reality.?

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says he's "just okay" at debating, as his campaign continued trying to lower expectations ahead of his first face-off with Republican Mitt Romney.

Speaking at an evening campaign rally Sunday, Obama graded his GOP opponent as "a good debater." The candidates will compete in their first of three debates Wednesday.

The president says Americans deserve a discussion focused on what the candidates would do to keep the country growing and restore middle class security.

Obama spoke to more than 11,000 people gathered at a high school in Las Vegas. The rally was aimed in part at rallying Hispanic voters and featured a performance by the Mexican rock band Mana.

The president is staying in Nevada until Wednesday, holding intensive debate preparations with top advisers.

Lenovo intros ThinkCentre M78 with AMD ASeries APU and a starting price of $449

There's never a bad time for computer makers to update any part of their extensive PC lineup, and today marks Lenovo's turn to introduce a new tower as part of its voluminous M Series. With the addition of this ThinkCentre M78, the Chinese outfit is touting the adoption of AMD's hot-off-the-press A-Series processors as one of the desktop's main features, plus there's also the inclusion of four USB 3.0 ports, the ability to add up to 32GB of DDR3 memory and support for as many as three monitors simultaneously -- all of which, according to Lenovo, make for a very "reliable PC with powerful performance, a high level of security and energy efficiency." Better yet, perhaps, is the ThinkCentre M78's decent starting price point of 449 bucks, with units expected to start shipping this month from Lenovo's own website and other third-party retailers.

Things you should know about bad credit loans - Financial News ...

Bad credit situations are common these days. Many people have been affected by the global economic crisis making getting a loan difficult. Banks are much stricter about lending so many seek to obtain bad credit loans. You might be desperate, but before you act it is important to get some facts about bad credit loans. Here are some things you should be aware of before you borrow.

High Interest Rates

Institutions that offer bad credit loans often charge high interest rates sometimes even over 100%. It is important to read and understand all the terms and conditions on a bad credit loan before you borrow. If you don?t think you can make the payments you are better off looking for help somewhere else.

Scam artists

There are many fake loan institutions out there looking to take advantage of people. They appear very legitimate, but they are just waiting to steal your money from you. Avoid any lender that asks for a ?security deposit? or ?processing payment? or any other type of up front payment before you get the loan. They will quite simply take your money, and you will never hear from them again.

Other options

There are ways to get a loan though even if you have bad credit. For example:

You borrow against the value of your home or the equity you have paid towards your mortgage. Remember that if you can?t pay the loan the bank takes over ownership of your house.

These are organizations similar to banks but the owners are members of the credit union. All the members work in the same industry or live in the same geographic area. Credit unions are more flexible in their lending criteria as compared to banks.

It doesn?t hurt to ask a family member or friend for a loan. Write up an official contract agreeable to both parties. If you do it right you will both feel more comfortable.

Ask someone to co-sign on a bank loan with you. You are much more likely to get approved for a bank loan if someone with good credit is willing to sign the loan contract with you.

These are online sites that connect individual lenders with borrowers. Check out sites like www.prosper.com. The interest rates here are usually reasonable, but you have to sell yourself and transmit confidence to the lender.

Get a job

Your chances of being approved for a loan are much higher if you can show that you are employed. This applies to all types of bad credit loans. Unemployment makes lenders nervous and less likely to approve you for a loan.

Many people suffering from bad credit are in complicated situations, but there are options. If you present yourself as informed and prepared to make payments you are more likely to get approved for a bad credit loan.
