Markets cautious ahead of key week for Greece

LONDON (AP) ? Global markets edged lower in lackluster trading on Monday as investors remained cautious ahead of a crucial week for Greece, whose leaders will try to show they are making progress in implementing economic reforms.

In Europe, the FTSE-100 index of leading British companies closed 0.5 percent lower at 5,824.37 while Germany's DAX fell 0.1 percent to 7,033.68. France's CAC-40 shed 0.2 percent to 3,480.58.

Wall Street also slipped ? the Dow was down 0.1 percent and the broader S&P 500 0.2 percent ? while Asian markets had earlier closed lower.

Investors this week are watching Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' visit to Germany and France, where he is expected to ask for an extension on Greece's deadline to meet fiscal targets as the country carries out painful reforms. Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the eurozone finance ministers' meetings, will be in Athens on Wednesday to meet Samaras.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Monday that Athens must follow through with reforms but added that Berlin wants Greece to remain in the eurozone. There is, however, little chance of Germany supporting a third rescue package, Volker Kauder, a senior ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, was quoted by Der Spiegel as saying.

Ahead of Samaras' meetings, Greece's finance officials were trying on Monday to secure ?11.5 billion ($14.19 billion) in budget savings necessary for the country to continue receiving its bailout funds. Greece's debt inspectors will issue a report next month on whether the country is doing enough to cut its debt.

In Asia, the Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.4 percent to close at 2,106.96, the lowest level since early 2009 as investors continue to be cautious about the world's second largest economy amid mounting signs of a slowdown. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index gained 0.3 percent to 879.25. Agriculture, biotechnology and food companies led gains while insurance, real estate and engineering companies dropped.

A report over the weekend that property prices in July rose slightly indicated the property market was benefiting from recent interest rate cuts, analysts said. But investors were still downbeat about prospects for further big stimulus measures, which are often announced on weekends or holidays.

"Every weekend investors are expecting the (Chinese) central government would throw out polices and every Monday comes in and there are no policies," said Jackson Wong, a vice president at Tanrich Securities. "That disappoints investors in general."

Elsewhere, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.1 percent to close at 9,171.16 while South Korea's Kospi was practically unchanged to end at 1,946.31. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.1 percent to 20,104.27.

Crude oil futures were down 22 cents to $95.79 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 41 cents to finish at $96.01 per barrel in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro was trading at $1.2346, down 0.1 percent from Friday, while the dollar was steady at 79.42 yen against the Japanese currency.

Can Meditation Make You Smarter? | Mental Health Hub

Mark Scott / Getty Images

Most of us know that meditating is a great way to reduce stress. But meditative practice goes beyond taking a chill pill. Meditating is also associated with structural changes in the brain that help sharpen focus and improve memory and multitasking skills. But can this mind-body practice really help you get straight As?

Smarty (Yoga) Pants ? Why It Matters
It?s not just treehuggers and ultra-yogis who meditate. In 2007, about 9 percent of American adults tried getting into their Zen zones at least once in the past year. Most people say they meditate to manage stress, but meditative practice affects the brain in many other ways.

While people have been meditating for thousands of years, it wasn?t until the 1970s that scientists started focusing on its brainy benefits. Numerous studies suggest that regular meditation (about six hours a week) may actually change brain structure. Scientists have found meditation is associated with a thicker cerebral cortex and more grey matter ? i.e., the parts of the brain linked to memory, attention span, decision-making and learning. But a year of silent meditation isn?t always necessary. One study found people who meditated at least once a week for four years showed increased cortical gyrification, the folding of the cerebral cortex that helps people process information.

It?s still unclear how meditation actually changes the brain, but some scientists say devoting complete attention to one specific object or thought actually alters our neural networks. And just remember, these studies don?t imply meditating will cause any changes in our brains, just that these cognitive abilities are associated with meditation.

Other research skips the brain scans and suggests some practical benefits of meditation. ?Om?-ing is connected to better concentration and multitasking skills ? things some of us might wish for when losing focus on the job. Researchers think meditation helps people deal with interruptions and work on multiple assignments more efficiently. Meditation can also help students battle stress on exam day, possibly boosting their academic performance. But before replacing the GCal with breathing exercises, beware of conflicting scientific findings.

Breathe In, Breathe Out ? The Answer/Debate
So what?s the real deal? Meditation may be linked to some short-term perks, like acing a memory test, but scientists have yet to figure out how long the potential cognitive benefits of meditation last. Meanwhile, one study failed to find any correlation between short-term breathing meditation and cognitive abilities like memory, intelligence, and academic achievement. And some scientists argue that meditation only has brain-boosting power when we expect to see those kind of results.

It?s also worth noting that there are many different types of meditation, and certain people may benefit more from one meditation style over another. So if you?re looking to get some big results from a little inward reflection, choose a type of meditation you like, and feel most comfortable doing. From mantra to mindfulness?and Zen to qigong, there are plenty of ways to get that third eye in focus.

Do you regularly practice meditation? What do you find are its best benefits?? Tell us in the comments below.

Hector Lombard, Frank Trigg, Jamie Varner: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.10.12

Fighting injured.? When fighters' paychecks are contingent upon them getting into the cage and performing like trained monkey/gladiator/Rock'em ?Sock'em Robot hybrids, we're going to get a lot of dudes who eschew proper medical care and healing for the sake of being able to make mortgage payments.? It's just a fact of life.? And it's made even more prevalent when you factor in the money promotions put into hyping those particular matchups and whatever emotion fans invest in those particular fighters.? All that amounts to a heck of a lot of pressure on those who might be injured.? If, by now, you've figured out that today's morning news roundup deals with someone having fought injured, you are correct!? Follow the jump to collect your prize!

  • According to former Bellator champ-turned-lukewarm UFC middleweight Hector Lombard, his recent Octagon debut at UFC 149 was tainted by a pre-existing injury.? What was holding him back?? A fractured sternum.? Yikes.? That's almost as bad as the time Tito Ortiz fought with a fractured skull, a ruptured disc, a torn ACL, rickets and Whooping Cough.? Anyway, Lombard ended up losing a lackluster split decision to Tim Boetsch, so yeah, sure, a busted sternum could do that.

?

  • Former UFC welterweight Frank Trigg was arrested on domestic violence charges in Las Vegas, N.V.? Details are sparse, but MMAFighting has ascertained that he's out on bond, and that this isn't the first time issues have arisen between Trigg and his estranged wife.? Double yikes.

?

  • Resurgent UFC lightweight Jamie Varner says he could've won his UFC on FOX 4 fight against Joe Lauzon (Lauzon won and both men got a fat Fight of the Night bonus), but it would've been boring if he'd gone that route and done what he'd needed to win.? Okay.? Thanks? I guess?

?

  • The matchup between B.J. Penn and up-and-coming star Rory MacDonald has allegedly been rescheduled for the UFC on FOX installment slated for December.? This is according to fighter-turned-TV personality Nate Quarry, who said this on MMA Uncensored on SpikeTV last night.? However, since I can't very well link to a TV show (Can I?? Can I plug my computer into my DVR?), here's BloodyElbow reiterating those very words.

?

That's it for now.? Follow me here on Twitter.? If you dare.

Thinking abstractly may help to boost self-control

ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) ? Many of the long term goals people strive for -- like losing weight -- require us to use self-control and forgo immediate gratification. And yet denying our immediate desires in order to reap future benefits is often very hard to do.

In a new article in the August issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, researchers Kentaro Fujita and Jessica Carnevale of The Ohio State University propose that the way people subjectively understand, or construe, events can influence self-control.

Research from psychological science suggests that categorizing things abstractly into broad categories (called high-level construal) allows us to psychologically distance ourselves from the pushes and pulls of the immediate moment. This, in turn, makes us more sensitive to the broad implications of our behavior and leads us to show greater consistency between our values and our behavior.

For example, a dieter choosing based on immediately apparent differences between the choices (low-level construal) might focus on taste and opt for a candy bar over an apple. A dieter choosing on the basis of high-level construal, however, might view the choice in the broader terms of a choice between weight loss and hedonism, and opt for the apple.

The researchers draw together many strands of research to provide evidence for the role of these different kinds of construal in decisions involving self-control. They argue that research investigating the link between construal level and self-control is important and timely as some of the most pressing societal problems -- including obesity, addiction, debt -- are associated with failures of self-control.
