Yahoo Internet Life Magazine Is an Awesome Relic of the Dot Com Era

Yahoo yesterday announced that it's bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion to communicate to millennials cool, hip, relevant, and that it understands what GIFs are. But back in the early ages of the dot com-era, the company was saying that through a monthly publication called Yahoo Internet Life Magazine.

From 1995-2002, Yahoo's glossy was published by Ziff Davis, which licensed the Yahoo name. The mag featured regular columns from Roger Ebert, and get this?critical reviews of not just gadgets but also websites. Just look at some of the covers. With hallmark names and phrases of the 90s like Monica Lewinsky, Senifeld, e-mail, and web cam revolution, it's an incredible picture of the early years of the internet as a democratic concept. Hey, maybe if Yahoo was cool in the 90s, it can be cool again 20 years later. [BuzzFeed]

6 Tips to Help Your Child Adjust to Your Newly Adopted Baby | A ...

How do you help your older child adjust to a new baby in the house? It is not easy, but it can be done in a way that encourages your child and keeps him from feeling displaced. Adding a new baby to the family is a life-changing experience.?There are things you, as parents, can do to create a positive and healthy family atmosphere. Bringing baby home?doesn?t?have to be a stressful time!

Follow these few simple guidelines and equip your family to conquer the challenges ahead. Going from a family of three to a family of four can be a joyous event, so celebrate this blessed time!

  1. If you have been chosen by a birth mother, and your toddler is old enough to have a conversation, try sharing the news. Tell him that sometime soon; he will be getting a new brother or sister. Read simple picture books to your child that exhort how wonderful it is to be an older sibling. Read books about babies and ask him if he remembers what it was like to be a baby. Ask him to share what babies need to grow big and strong.
  2. With the imminent arrival, there is bound to some minor upheaval. Include your toddler in the process by letting him help decorate the new baby?s nursery. Let him decide between the green lamp and the pink lamp. Make sure that either choice is an acceptable one to you and your spouse. Let him pick out a few soft toys to put in the room.
  3. It is important that for the first year (at least) your toddler does not have to share a room with the new baby. It can cause your child to feel extreme stress and lose valuable sleep. It is also very dangerous. A young child left along with an infant for periods of time is an accident waiting to happen.
  4. During the day, if you have to leave the children alone for even a minute, have a ?safe zone? to place the baby while you are gone. A port-a-crib in the main living area, surrounded by a baby gate is a good alternative. Young children are good at throwing toys and other sharp objects. Make your safe zone out of throwing range.
  5. When baby comes home, let your toddler be a ?big boy helper?. Give him simple jobs to do to help with the baby. Let him pick out clothes for baby to wear. Let him bring you a diaper or help put the baby?s socks on. Try to establish a routine early on, so your older child can know what to expect each day. He wants to feel important and successful. He wants to feel like a valuable member of the family, so don?t be shy about giving him responsibilities. Choose jobs that he is bound to master and feel proud about. Thank him and recognize all his hard work!
  6. Many people are bound to visit. They will be cooing over the new baby and bringing her presents. It is a good idea to buy a few small surprises for your older child. When all the attention is focused away from him, astonish him with a wrapped present to honor the ?big brother?! ?A good first gift is always a baby doll; complete with a bottle, diapers and other essentials. He can practice taking care of the new infant (just like Mommy and Daddy).

Don?t be surprised if your toddler begins to regress, experience separation anxiety, and/or has a tantrum or two. These reactions are common to the social and emotional pressures your toddler may face. Divide and conquer is a great approach! Many husbands and wives are able to take a few weeks off of work to bond as a family, when the baby arrives. You might want to spend special time alone with each child. You can take your child for a walk to the park, while your husband changes and feeds the baby at home. Later, you can take the baby outside to enjoy the sunshine and daddy reads your toddler a story.

Congratulations on baby number two! You are gearing yourself up for a lifetime of love and happiness through adoption! Your little bundle is going to bless you in ways you cannot even imagine and your toddler is along for the ride (weather he wants to or not). Be mindful of his little heart and plan now to assure that this transition is a positive one for him. As he grows, his sibling is going to play a bigger and bigger role in his life. Create the groundwork now for a harmonious and loving family dynamic!

Dior presents cruise fashions amid stars in Monaco

MONACO (AP) ? The glittering star power of Cannes migrated up the coast to Monaco for front-row seats at Dior's colorful, sexy cruise fashion show.

With the Mediterranean Sea the picturesque backdrop, Dior showcased its 2014 collection on Saturday night. It was a wet, cold and generally miserable outside the white stage, but Raf Simons' designs provided the shimmering summery lift for the evening.

Among those on hand were Oscar-winner and Dior spokeswoman Marion Cotillard, actresses Ruth Wilson and Jessica Biel, and Prince Albert of Monaco, along with his fashionable wife, Princess Charlene.

Before the show, Biel called Dior's fashions beautiful, saying she also appreciated them because they were made for real woman. If that was the case, such women are dynamic gazelles who even in their downtime have multiple agendas.

There were sheer lace cover-ups, brightly colored dresses, and jackets and coats made of wool.

In press materials provided at the show, Simons explained his inspiration to prominently feature lace in the collection.

"I never worked with lace before," he said. "It was about transforming the meaning of the material; not romantic, not historical, not old, to something light, playful, colorful and modern ? with energy."

Many of the pieces had an effervescent feel, like the metallic blended with sheer lace and a strip of a coral floral print in one dress; a wool jacket and pants were made vibrant with bright red color.

But there were other outfits that had a more traditional look, like a flowing spaghetti-strap red dress that hit mid-calf at the front but draped near the floor in the back, and the one-piece bathing suits that harkened back to old-style Hollywood glamour ? particularly a brilliant blue piece with ruching in the back.

After an enthusiastic ovation for the show, guests such as Liv Tyler were shuttled to the Oceanographic Museum nearby as Prince Albert and his wife threw a reception that showcased some of the fashions ? including Dior ? worn by his late mother, Princess Grace.

PFT: Ravens face tough decisions on Suggs, Ngata

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

If Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano ever gets tired of having to tell people Josh Freeman is his starting quarterback, someone should probably mention to him that it?s kind of his own fault.

Schiano started singing like Tammy Wynette again in relation to Freeman Monday, the day after he was quoted as saying he was ?not against? the notion of starting rookie Mike Glennon instead.

?We have a starting quarterback, and it?s Josh Freeman,? Schiano said, via Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times.

According to the report, Schiano said he?s trying to be honest, and doesn?t mean to put pressure on Freeman by saying such things in the national media.

?I guess nationally, they don?t sit here with me every day like you guys [local media] do,? Schiano said. ?From the day we arrived, our whole program has [been based on] competition, . . . That?s what we believe in. It?s the most competitive sports league in the world. It?s competition, and I love it.

?But we have our starting quarterback, and it?s Josh Freeman. I?m not looking to find another.?

If he really wanted to clear things up, he could always, you know, stop leaving the door open a crack every time he talks about Glennon.

Or, if he wanted a stronger statement on Freeman and how much he loves him under center, he could give him a new contract to replace the final year of his rookie deal.

But it doesn?t appear at the moment that Schiano intends to do either.

And that?s fine, as long as everyone?s clear about the implication sent by those actions.

He likes Freeman, right up until the point he decides he doesn?t.

So Schiano?s apparently going to have to keep clarifying all the things that he keeps saying, whether to the national or local media.

A tour of the Jolla phone with software head Marc Dillon video

Say hello to the Jolla Phone. Pre-orders for the world's first Sailfish OS device started today and we've called into Helsinki to get the whole story from Jolla's co-founder and software head Marc Dillon. While we know there's a 4.5-inch "high definition" screen (resolution TBC), dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera, we were kept at arms length during our meeting with an early prototype. So, unfortunately, our full hands-on treatment will have to wait until later today. For now, Marc takes us through the thinking behind the hardware -- and what the notion of the "other half" really means -- right after the break.

The After Math Google IO 2013, BlackBerry World and Oh No Not Another Windows Phone

A new Lumia phone from Nokia, this year's Google I/O and BlackBerry World -- yep, it was a pretty hectic week for us, but also a good seven days for tech news. Even if Google didn't have any truly new hardware for us, it's started up its own on-demand music service, gave us more details on Google Glass, redesigned its Maps and, well, it was a very long keynote. Join us after the break for a numerical breakdown of that and the rest of the week's big news.

Cops investigate after NY college student killed

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? A funeral has been scheduled for Wednesday for a 21-year-old Hofstra University student who was gunned down during a break-in at her apartment near the school's Long Island campus.

Nassau County police said Andrea Rebello, who was with her twin sister Jessica and several other students inside an off-campus house, was shot and killed Friday during an early morning home invasion that also left the armed intruder dead.

Rebello was a popular junior studying public relations. The shooting, which took place just steps from campus, cast a pall over the university community as it geared up for commencement on Sunday.

"Today is the last day of finals and this should be a happy day on campus; but it's not," said Hofstra freshman Scott Aharoni of Great Neck, as he passed through the area rife with yellow crime-scene tape Friday. "It's really sad."

Police are still investigating.

It wasn't clear who fired the fatal shots or how many rounds were fired, but authorities said police were involved in the shooting, which happened at about 2:30 a.m. A weapon was found inside the house, police said. The gunman has not yet been identified.

Rebello's father, Fernando, was too distraught to discuss the incident in detail outside the family's Tarrytown, N.Y., home Friday.

"It's my daughter, my baby daughter," he told the Journal News through tears. "She was so beautiful. I'm so confused.

"I don't know what to do," he said.

The Journal News reported that Wednesday's funeral Mass for Rebello at Teresa of Avila Church in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., will be in Portuguese.

Hofstra's commencement ceremonies will go on as planned on Sunday despite the tragedy. Hofstra spokeswoman Karla Schuster said she expects school President Stuart Rabinowitz to acknowledge the shooting in his remarks.

The two sisters, another woman and another man were inside the two-story rental house when the gunman, wearing a ski mask, forced his way in, according to Nassau County Inspector Kenneth Lack. The intruder allowed the third unidentified woman to leave, and she called 911. Police provided no other details on the man who was in the house at the time of the break-in, except to say he was not injured.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press the woman called 911 from near an ATM. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Victoria Dehel, who lives four houses away, said she heard what sounded like fighting. At first she ignored it, figuring it was from rowdy students coming home from a bar.

Suddenly, "This girl was shrieking," followed by loud bangs just seconds later.

"It didn't sound good at all," Dehel said. "I turned to my boyfriend and I said, 'I think someone just got murdered.' It was awful."

Andrea Rebello and her sister were 2010 graduates of Sleepy Hollow High School, according to principal Carol Conklin-Spillane.

"They were smart happy beautiful young women," Conklin-Spillane said. "I speak about them together because they were very much a matched pair. They were best friends by choice."

Andrea Rebello quoted Benjamin Franklin and Bob Marley in a yearbook photo from the school.

"Believe some of what you hear and only half of what you see" was attributed to the founding father and "Love the life you live, live the life you love" was the citation for the reggae legend.

A police car was parked Friday in front of the Rebello house in Tarrytown, a well-kept ranch home.

Neighbor Jane Phelan said the twins' mother recently told her the sisters had moved out of a dormitory and into an off-campus house.

"It must be very hard on the parents and particularly on the surviving twin," her husband, Jack Phelan said.

Business Officer, 46(3), 44-45 Theme: Administrative Computing, TCO, Community Software, Open Source, Kuali Financial System (KFS). A Summary and Annotation:This paper introduces actual application of the community software concept with the? successful implementation of the Kuali FinancialSystem (KFS) (Retrieved from www.kuali.org.) at The University of California, Indiana University, Michigan State University and the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey. The University of California and Indiana University report respectively 8 million and 17 million cost savings in comparison with alternatives commercial software. The paper further emphasizes integration of mobile and Ipad initiatives to meet information access and financial reporting needs on campus. This article illustrates the urgency for Collaboration and cooperation among institutions of Higher Learning as a mean to achieve administrative efficiency.? The quick jump from reporting about the Kuali system to mobile computing and Ipad initiatives seems to be out of context. This is nevertheless understandable since the paper is basically reporting the issues debated by representatives the National Association of Colleges and University Business Officers (Retrieved from www.nacubo.org) during its annual meeting in 2012. 2 Title:. Pay Nothing? Easier Said Than Done. Reference:?AZEVEDO, A. (2013). Pay Nothing? Easier Said Than Done. Chronicle Of Higher ? Education, 59(21), A18-A19. Theme: Free and open text books Annotation and Summary:This paper discusses the challenges top offering free and open textbooks to college and university students in the United States. Issues involving production quality, and adoption by both students and educators are perceived as major roadblocks for success. The tradeoff to write a book for free in open source technology paradigm and to do the same for free is definitely not an attractive option. ?The paper invites consideration of the possible influential impact of state government intervention for the production and offering of free text books using an effort in California as illustration. But the concerns over incentives, quality, and adoption remain. The paper raises issues of significant concern such as lack of incentives and interests of faculty in writing free textbooks, the poor quality of production, and the low adoption rate of such products by faculty, and students as major obstacle to the success of free open textbooks in Higher Education. Nevertheless, I suspect that paying faculty to contribute in the production of open source textbooks from the same logic they are paid to teach could be further help in the promotion and adoption of Open Source Textbooks in Higher Education. 3 Title:?Creating Higher Education Academic and Information Technology Resources in an International Context Reference:?BARON, J., WILLIS, J., & LEE, R. Theme: Open Education, Collaboration, Higher Education Summary and Annotation:This inquiry is grounded on the contribution of such contemporary factors as globalization, the internet, technological innovations, and the Open Source movement? in fostering international collaboration and cooperation among institutions of higher learning for the creation of Academic and Information Technology Resources for Higher Education.? Such resources include but are not limited to software, textbooks, courseware, and course management systems under the guidance of open source, open access, and open education philosophies as alternatives to the expensive proprietary market.? The paper defines open source software as products developed ?through a collaborative model of development that involves a community of geographically dispersed contributors?, distributed under specific license agreements, and which can be modified due to the availability of the code. The paper traces the evolution of Open Source Software to the early days of the computer in the 1950s and 60s to be developed into an open philosophical approach encompassing new forms of open-source collaboration which led to ?open educational resource projects, such as Connexions? (Retrieved from (http://cnx.rice.edu) and OpenCourseWare (OCW) project (http://ocw.mit.edu).? The paper discusses a number of open source projects with related references. ?These include the Sakai Foundation (http://www.sakaiproject.org) that supports work on the Sakai package for content management and course management, Connexions which is a project at Rice University to support open access e-publishing and course management (http://cnx.rice.edu) that is supported by the Hewlett-Packard Foundation, and the Kuali Foundation (http://www.kuali.org/) that manages work on a suite of administrative software packages for higher education?.? The inquiry provides a vast array of current efforts and projects with a global appeal such as SourceForge (http://www.sourceforge.org), the Open Education Resources unit ( http://oerwiki.iiep-unesco.org /) in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the OpenCourseWare Consortium (www.ocwconsortium.org ) just to name a few.The paper rightly considers Open Source Software OSS as the prototype for the organization of new types of collaboration. Absent from consideration are references to collaboration with foreign educational entities. Nevertheless, the paper remains a significant contribution in the literature on the impact of The Open Source Movement on Higher Education from a global perspective. 4 Title:?Open Source Software in Computer Science and IT Higher Education: A Case Study Reference:Dan R., L., & Robert S., L. (2011). Open Source Software in Computer Science and IT Higher Education: A Case Study. International Journal Of Advanced Computer Sciences And Applications, (1),? Theme:? Open Source Software? in Computer Science Education Summary and Annotation:This study focuses on the advantages of using open source software for academic purposes in comparison with standard proprietary software.? The paper is divided into four sections which include background of the open source movement, identification of different open source licenses, the impact of open source licenses, the use of open source in teaching computer science courses, and? a comparison between open source versus proprietary software on the ground of cost, appeal to students and ease of use. On all factors, the outcome supports the use and adoption of open source. . While the cost of acquisition of the open source software is free, implementation and administration cost vary depending on the circumstances while overall costs remain lower for faculty and students. Open source software appeal more to students due to the academic roots of open source software, the lower cost, and the availability of the source code. The study documents the following as advantages of open source:? readiness for research, implementation,? and development of ?new ideas?, portability to different operating systems, the? availability of the source code for the newest version of a specific application, and the vocation of open source to promote entrepreneurship without startup costs. The main disadvantages. The study finds that ?The main disadvantage in using open source software is the fact that Linux usability on laptops is seriously affected by the lack hardware drivers especially for wireless, graphic cards and suspend/sleep functionality in laptops?.This study stands as a major contribution on the values and merit of open source technologies in Higher Education classrooms. While acknowledging the challenges of open source software in the classroom, the article rightly suggests mixing proprietary and open source resources to better educate Computer Science students. ?5 Title: Adopting Open-Source Software Applications in U.S. Higher Education: A Cross-Disciplinary Review of the Literature Reference: van Rooij, S. (2009). Adopting Open-Source Software Applications in U.S. Higher Education: A Cross-Disciplinary Review of the Literature.?Review Of Educational Research,?79(2), 682-701.Summary:This paper was written to support? the adoption of open source software for academic and administrative purposes by US institutions of higher learning as a more flexible and less costly venue. The focus is on using open source applications such as Moodle (retrieved from www.moodle.org ) Sakai (retrieved from? www.sakaiproject.org) and the? Kualy Financial Systems (retrieved from www.kuali.org/kfs). Upon introduction of a definition of open source from the perspective of codes understandable by the human eyes to ?the concept of the freedom to run, modify, and distribute copies of a program, either free of charge or for a fee.?, the article offers a literature review focused ?only on open-source software at the application layer, with emphasis on systems that support teaching and learning?. The method and scope consisted of key words searches of literary sources for results to be analyzed using the NVIVO, ?a software program for the management and analysis of text data?. The findings reveal that the literature is primarily dominated by ?(a) social and philosophical benefits, (b) software development methodology benefits, (c) security and risk management benefits, (d) software adoption life cycle benefits, and (e) total cost of ownership benefits?. In addition, the inquiry finds that open source is primarily assumed to an issue of concern for technologists while this is just not the case when it comes to administrative and educational use. While this study reveals a gap in the literature when it comes to enabling ?sound pedagogy or enables institutions to achieve a balance of sound pedagogy and technical efficiency?, it establishes the dominating role of Sakai, Kuali, and Moodle as reliable resources for further research. Title:?Open-Source Learning Management Systems: A Predictive Model for Higher Education Reference:?van Rooij, S. (2012). Open-Source Learning Management Systems: A Predictive Model for Higher Education. ?????? Journal Of Computer Assisted Learning, 28(2), 114-125. 6 Theme:? Criteria for adoption of open source LMS by Higher Education. Summary:This quantitative study examines the selection criteria used by an institution of higher education for adoption of an open-source learning management system (LMS). Building on prior studies regarding such efforts in higher education a survey of 285 Chief Information Officers and Chief Academic Officers from US institutions was conducted in order to determine patterns, strategies, and criteria used in such contexts. First, the paper introduces Open Source Software (OSS) and offers comprehensive inventory of the best know open source learning management systems currently available. The list includes the following: Moodle (http://www.moodle.org) with 30,000 users, Sakai (http://www.sakaiproject.org) which features ?generic collaboration along Claroline (http://www.claroline.net), available in more than 35 languages and used in 80 countries; .LRN (http://www.dotlrn.com ), a system thathas e-commerce and project management applicationsbuilt in;? ATutor (http://www.atutor.ca ), developed in Canada and includes more than 17 000 registered user sites, and; Bodington (http://www.bodington.org ), developed in the U.K. and implemented at the University of Leeds and the University of Oxford. Second, the paper presents current LMS evaluation models with an alternative approach. Third, the method, statistical analysis, and results are introduced. The paper ends with acknowledgement of the limitations of the study and actual conclusion. Bottom line,?The present research revealed that an institution?s Carnegie Classification, previous experience with OSS, focus on student learning, and commitment to organizational self-reliance were all predictive of the institution?s decision to opt in or opt out of an open-source LMS?.

This inquiry offers a solid frame of reference with regard to the criteria for adoption of open source learning management system by higher education. One might surmise that the limitations spelled in the study might create a built-in bias jeopardizing the objectivity and reliability of the study. The study nevertheless stands as a strong guide for higher education in the adoption of open source learning management systems.

House Republicans repeal Obamacare again. Why do they keep doing it?

House Republicans repealed Obamacare for the fourth time Thursday, and like their other efforts, it will go nowhere in the Senate. Yet for the party's base, it's hardly a pointless vote.

Two Democrats joined Republicans in voting for a measure that represents a cornerstone of the Republican attack on Mr. Obama and congressional Democrats in the election cycle to come.?

While the scandals currently roiling Washington ? from the IRS?s overreach to the Department of Justice?s seizing of Associated Press phone records to a lack of clarity over the Obama administration?s response to the terror attacks in Benghazi, Libya ? don?t seem to have a common theme, Republicans see a unifying thread: government overreach.

Republicans argue, in effect, this is what happens when you put your faith in big government. And at the bedrock of that critique, the purest form of this governmental overreach in the minds of many conservatives, is Obama?s signature health-care law.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R) of Florida put it just so on the Senate floor on Wednesday.

?This same IRS [who targeted conservative groups for more scrutiny] will now have unfettered power to come after every American and ensure that either you?re buying insurance or you?re paying them a tax. Every American business. The front lines of enforcing Obamacare falls to the IRS. That is what happens when you expand the scope and power of government,? Senator Rubio said.

?It?s always sold as a noble concept. It?s always offered up by government as, ?We?re going to give the government more power so they can do good things for us.? But the history of mankind proves that every time a government gets too much power, it almost always ends up using it in destructive ways against the personal liberties of individuals,? he continued.

The health-care law is such a fundamental piece of the Republican political playbook because it has enormous implications for the lives of ordinary Americans ? and thus weighty political implications.

Republicans have argued for a long, long time that excluding a handful of popular provisions in the health-care law, the implementation of the bulk of the law regarding insurance exchanges in late 2013 and 2014 will be a disaster. That?s because, they argue, the law is too complex and dysfunctional to be well-implemented, Republicans argue, and will drive up insurance costs with little accompanying benefit.

?Ultimately, that?s the meaning of the vote being taken by the House of Representatives on Thursday,? said Joe Trauger, a vice president at the National Association of Manufacturers, in an e-mailed statement. ?It is a vote of no-confidence.?

Americans tend to agree that the law will drive up premiums, according?to a recent survey by TIPP/The Christian Science Monitor. Some 61 percent say that premiums will increase significantly versus 7 percent who think they will stay the same and 25 percent who think premiums will drop significantly.

Depression linked to almost doubled stroke risk in middle-aged women

May 16, 2013 ? Depressed middle-aged women have almost double the risk of having a stroke, according to research published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.

In a 12-year Australian study of 10,547 women 47-52 years old, researchers found that depressed women had a 2.4 times increased risk of stroke compared to those who weren't depressed. Even after researchers eliminated several factors that increase stroke risks, depressed women were still 1.9 times more likely to have a stroke.

"When treating women, doctors need to recognize the serious nature of poor mental health and what effects it can have in the long term," said Caroline Jackson, Ph.D., study author and an epidemiologist in the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland in Australia. "Current guidelines for stroke prevention tend to overlook the potential role of depression."

This is the first large-scale study in which researchers examined the association between depression and stroke in younger middle-aged women. The closest comparison is with the U.S.-based Nurses' Health Study, which found a 30 percent higher risk of stroke among depressed women. However, the average participant's age in the Nurses' study was 14 years older.

Jackson and her colleagues analyzed survey results from the nationally representative Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Participants answered questions about their mental and physical health and other personal details every three years in 1998-2010.

About 24 percent of participants reported being depressed, based on their responses to a standardized depression scale and their recent use of anti-depressants. Self-reported responses and death records revealed 177 first-time strokes occurred during the study.

The researchers used statistical software and repeated measures at each survey point to analyze the relationship between being depressed and having a stroke.

To distinguish the independent effects of depression, they factored out various characteristics that can affect stroke risks, including: age; socioeconomic status; lifestyle habits such as smoking, alcohol and physical activity; and physiological conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, being overweight and diabetes.

Although the increased stroke risk associated with depression was large in the study, the absolute risk of stroke is still fairly low for this age group, Jackson said. About 2.1 percent of American women in their 40s and 50s suffer from stroke. In the study, only about 1.5 percent of all women had a stroke. That number increased to slightly more than 2 percent among women suffering from depression.

Similar results could be expected among American and European women, Jackson said.

"We may need more targeted approaches to prevent and treat depression among younger women, because it could have a much stronger impact on stroke for them now rather than later in life," she said.

It's still unclear why depression may be strongly linked to stroke in this age group. The body's inflammatory and immunological processes and their effects on our blood vessels may be part of the reasons, she said.

The study's co-author is Gita Mishra, Ph.D.The American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn how to recognize a stroke and to act fast during a stroke emergency. When people recognize a stroke and act fast by calling 9-1-1, they have a greater chance of improving the outcome. Remember F.A.S.T. and the symptoms that come on suddenly:

  • F -- Face drooping
  • A -- Arm weakness
  • S -Speech difficulty
  • T -- Time to call 9-1-1

Google changelog reveals upcoming Chrome devices with Star Fox-inspired codenames

Upcoming Google Chrome x86 devices get Star Foxinspired codenames

Though we know virtually nothing about any Chrome OS-based devices in development at Google, we at least know what their engineers are calling them. Google insider François Beaufort revealed that developers working on such projects might be Star Fox fans, as several possible x86 devices seem to bear the Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy monikers, according to a recent changelog. None of this is proof of any future products, of course, but Fox and Slippy seem to be Haswell-equipped, according to Beaufort -- which would be a nice step up from their 1993-era Nintendo graphics power.

Janie, The Dog With A Broken Back, Is Proof That Miracles Can Happen (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Once ravaged by crippling pain and fear, a brave dog's inspiring recovery is a testament to the power of second chances.

Janie, a 2-year-old terrier mix, was brought to a shelter in the Los Angeles area in mid-April. She had been run over by a car after being abandoned by her owner.

According to Annie Hart, executive director of the Bill Foundation, a Beverly Hills-based rescue organization that rehabilitates and finds homes for dogs taken from the streets and from shelters, Janie's back -- and spirit -- had been broken by the trauma she had endured.

"In so much pain, and in a strange place, she was too scared to let anyone touch her. She quickly was labeled aggressive and it was highly unlikely -- less than a 10 percent chance -- that she would get out of the shelter alive," Hart told The Huffington Post.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 to 7 million dogs and other companion animals are brought into U.S. shelters every year. About 3 million to 4 million are euthanized.

Against the odds, Janie was given a chance at a happy life, thanks to the dedication of the shelter's employees, as well as several concerned animal welfare workers, like Hart and animal rescue group Hope for Paws founder Eldad Hagar, who had heard about Janie's plight and refused to give up on her.

Donations began pouring in from dozens of people all over the world who had responded to Hart's plea for financial assistance on the Bill Foundation Facebook page. Soon, Janie was brought to Los Angeles' Animal Specialty Emergency Center to undergo surgery for her broken back.

"Luckily for Janie, the fracture is of the seventh lumbar vertebra, which can be fixed with surgery. Had it been much higher, she would have been paralyzed for life," said Hart, adding that the procedure had still been challenging, as the pup had been "so fearful of the world" that she often wouldn't allow the medical team to get close to her.

Fortunately, the surgery was a great success. The pooch, however, wasn't out of the woods just yet.

"The first time I went to see Janie after her surgery, she was painfully scared and acting aggressively. I sat with her for quite some time, but I couldn't get near her. Even her doctors were having a difficult time medicating her and checking her vitals," said Hart. "A few days later, with her medical team's approval, I asked Eldad [Hagar] to visit her with me and see if he could get through to her."

Known for his ability to connect with even the most desperate and aggressive of canines, Hagar was able to calm Janie's fears, eventually getting the once-petrified pooch to sit contentedly on his lap. (Watch the moving process in the video above. Warning: Tearjerker alert.)

"Honestly, before I saw what he was able to do, I was gravely concerned that Janie was going to be a very difficult, aggressive dog forever. However, Eldad had a profound ability to connect with Janie and help put her at ease," said Hart of the pup's miraculous turnaround. "Each step he helped her make was more beautiful and tender than the last and something I think all humans can learn from. Time, compassion and patience can go a long way to heal the deepest of wounds."

Just weeks after her surgery, Janie has transformed into a happy, healthy dog. She's currently living with a foster family and is waiting to find a forever home. (Scroll down to watch a more recent video of Janie.)

"I became a part of dog rescue because I firmly believe in the power of second chances, and being a part of Janie's story reinforces this tenfold," said Hart. "Moments like this help fuel my soul to keep rescuing and sharing stories like Janie's, with the hope that just one person will see it and be moved by it. Maybe when they see a frightened dog in the shelter they will think twice and give them the second chance they so richly deserve."
